Our Impact

Maximizing value creation through sustainable practices.

Our impact in forestry through active forest management

Active forest management is a method to steer a forest in the desired direction. Through the formulation of objectives and subsequent target-oriented measures, we are able to influence forests in their growth. These activities always follow the natural cycle of a forest and are long-term oriented. The most important tool for this is the stem number reduction and thinning, in which trees are specifically removed to promote others. Mostly used is the Z-Tree method, which depends on 2 decisions. Initially, the trees chosen for prioritization are identified and marked; these are the so-called Z-trees. They must be vital, come from the dominant or predominant species, be of satisfactory quality, and have no damages. The second essential decision is that of the oppressors: Which trees are in competition with the crown space of the Z-tree? These oppressive trees are removed. Active forest management enables Moosehead Capital to achieve a wide range of valuable outcomes, including a positive impact on the environment.

Increased health and resiliance of forests

Due to the active interventions of active forest management, we are able to increase the health and resilience of our forests under management. The reduced stem count, due to thinning, allows more light for the remaining trees and the forest floor. In addition, the reduced stem count enables powerful tree crowns, wider spread roots, and sufficient growing space. These positive changes yield benefits including increased growth, health, vitality, and better resilience against environmental events as well as pests and pathogens.

Increased forest growth

By thinning at least 20 to 30% of the forest during the first stage, we significantly enhance overall forest growth. This approach results in higher average breast height diameter (BHD) per tree and a considerably lower height-to-diameter ratio, both of which are crucial indactors of high value trees. Additionally, the close functional relationship between crown diameter and BHD promotes the development of the desired knotless wood layer, ultimately yielding higher-quality logs.

Responsible Management

The avoidance of monocultures and clear-cutting is fundamental to our approach. By adhering to the forest’s natural development and cycles, we emphasize the critical importance of maintaining biodiversity. Large Scale clear-cutting, as a harvesting technique, is excluded from our practices, as we aim to work with the forest rather than disrupt its balance.

Our impact through the fully integrated sawmill

Fully integrated sawmills allow us to use smaller logs, extract more lumber from each log, and use 100% of each tree. In addition, state-of-the-art technology enables innovative timber processing techniques such as cross laminated timber (CLT) and glued laminated timber (GLT). Carbon capturing and the production of organic coal are another integral cornerstone of our fully integrated sawmill, enabling a green energy source. Moosehead Capital is therefore able to contribute to and participate in the sustainable production of future-ready construction materials as well as alternative energy sources.

Resource efficiency

A fully integrated sawmill enables us to utilize 100% of every tree, including sawdust, chips and bark, effectively eliminating raw material waste while enhancing both sustainability and efficiency. Additionally, by having all required production lines in-house with minimal transportation distances, we are able to significantly reduce packaging and transportation.

Sustainable construction

Thanks to technological advancements and the development of cross laminated timber (CLT) and glued laminated timber (GLT), timber now offers a viable and sustainable alternative to steel and concrete for multi-story construction. The production of CLT and GLT plays a vital part in Moosehead Capital’s business model, and through it we are able to contribute to resilient and sustainable construction.

Carbon capturing

The production of organic charcoal as a byproduct of our sawmill enables us to participate in carbon capturing. This renewable resource supports our energy self-sufficiency, while any excess production, along with carbon certificates, can be offered to third parties. These efforts allow us to contribute to combating climate change.

At Moosehead Capital, we are committed to creating long-term value through sustainable forestry and efficient, state-of-the-art timber production.

Sustainable Growth for Generations

We believe in creating long-term value through responsible forestry practices. Our commitment to sustainability ensures that future generations will benefit from thriving ecosystems and a stable, growing timber industry.
